Preps Explore Money!
In mathematics this week, the Preps explored Australian currency. They found out that many countries have different currencies and in Australia we use dollars and cents. The Preps unpacked each of the six coins by describing what physical features they have and how much value each coin holds. They then got hands on by ordering play and real-life Australian coins according to their value. They were able to explain that the smallest coin in our money system is 5 cents and the largest coin we have is 2 dollars which is made up of 200 cents.
A highlight of the week was when Marlon and Sierra’s Pa came in for a real-life coin hunt! Mr Travers hid 27 coins in the playground area and explained to the Preps what a metal detector was. Together, they used the metal detector and a handheld digger to find the coins! The coins were from many different countries, such as Papua New Guinea, Vietnam, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Fiji and New Zealand. The Preps loved examining their new coin and were lucky enough to keep them. A big thank you to Mr Travers for this wonderful activity. We all had so much fun!
Year 1 – ‘Tis the Season
‘Tis the season to be jolly’ has been the theme of Week 9. Squeals and gobsmacked faces have been heard and seen each morning as the children arrive and discover what the Year 1 class Elves, Candy Joy and Cookie, have been up to in the night. They are sometimes naughty and sometimes nice. The children have also been busy polishing up their writing skills and creating magical love messages to write within their personalised Christmas cards. We all have enjoyed an extra special experience as we have been learning that God had always planned to deliver Jesus, our saviour, even from the beginning- before Creation. To further explore this, they have been making a class and individual Jesse Tree, enjoying daily hearing stories from the Bible and matching the story elements to a symbol. Who would ever want this magical time of the year to end…it’s been an absolute delight celebrating the spirit of Christmas.
Year 2 – Money Skills
The Year 2 students have been spending the money they have earned this semester. Students could earn money for different tasks in the classroom, and for completing their home reading and having their diary signed. They have improved their money counting skills and have traded coins for notes, watching their ‘bank balance’ grow. Over the last few weeks many students donated preloved toys, games, puzzles, and books to their classroom shop, and they have taken on the role of ‘shop keepers’, pricing the items through a process of collaborating with each other to determine a reasonable and fair price. The Year 2 students have set up their shops and have enjoyed the roles of ‘shopkeeper’ and ‘customer’, calculating change and practising their money skills. A big thank you to all of the families who donated items for the shops and made this activity a possibility for the Year 2 students – they have enjoyed it immensely!
Year 3 – Where has the Time Gone?
Dear God,
Where has this year gone? It is hard to believe that we are approaching the last week of school for 2022. Thank you for the wonderful students in Year 3T in 2022 and the amazing memories that we have created and shared together.
This week, the kids have been reflecting on their favourite moments throughout the year. It is quite an emotional rollercoaster when you think about it!
I want to congratulate all the kids on their effort this year and for being the beautiful little people that they are.
I truly hope that you all have a blessed Christmas, with lots of love and family. Please also be mindful of those who are less fortunate and help in any way you can.
Thank you for the support throughout the year. Until next year…. keep an eye on The Vine.
Salvation Army Reverse Advent Calendar
This week the students at Christian College Surf Coast Campus have been collecting food for the Reverse Advent Calendar that is run by the Salvation Army. Each class was given a box to fill with non-perishable items. This will be delivered to families within the Geelong community, who without this support may not be able to enjoy a Christmas lunch this year.
Thank you to everyone who has supported us by sending in some food. We have been able to fill 15 boxes this year. This will be an amazing support for 15 families at this time of the year.
Qustodio App and Other Parent Resources
Last week we launched the Qustodio Parent App with our families as part of our Cyber Safe Schools Program, in partnership with Linewize by Family Zone.
We’ve been delighted by the level of engagement and uptake by parents with this tool so far. Qustodio is a tool intended to help parents and guardians be empowered to supervise and engage in positive conversations with their young people around their digital activity.
It has been wonderful to offer this tool, alongside our school’s Online Safety Hub, to parents and our broader community to support our children and teenagers in this space. I encourage parents who have not already done so to activate their account, and to explore the support resources under ‘Child Safety App’ on the Online Safety Hub. It may also be helpful to explore the article ‘Should I be using a parental control?’ which has helpful information and advice about the place and role of a tool like Qustodio in your overall home digital wellbeing strategy. Qustodio Parent Feedback Survey I invite our parents to take just a few moments and share some feedback on Qustodio and getting started with the parent app. Please click the link to access the Parent Feedback Survey Holiday Resources for Parents on our Online Safety Hub As we approach the holiday break and Christmas, there are a range of helpful guides and resources on our Online Safety Hub that parents may find supportive. There are direct links to some key guides below: The hub also has lots of helpful parent guides for specific games, social media platforms and other general technology and cyber safety questions under the ‘Parent Advice’ section.
Uniform Recycling Bin
Hello Surf Coast Families,
As most of you are already aware, the College is currently in uniform transition. ALL College Students are expected to be in the new uniform by 2025.
In the Multipurpose Room you will notice a bin which has been labelled Christian College Geelong Recycled Uniform.
This is for recycling our old Christian College uniforms.
For those families who wish to have their children’s uniform recycled, our uniform provider will be collecting these items and recycling the fabrics.
This incentive is to avoid the items going to landfill.
BROADCAST FROM Camp Australia OSHC
This year students will finish their academic studies on Friday the 9th of December. Camp Australia will continue to provide their program to students of CCG parent users until Thursday the 15th of December at the Junior School gym 39 Broughton Drive Belmont.
A MYTERN Thought for This Week
Things can get hectic at this time of the year, often throwing a random curve ball, making you skid out of control. At first your reaction will be extreme. That's ok. Once the panic is over, stop and breathe. Regain control. Don't judge it. Give it space to unfold... and then inspire you 👍😊
