Preps Celebrating the Joys of Christmas
As a special treat this week, we were lucky enough to spend some time with our Year 4 buddies getting ready for the most wonderful time of the year… Christmas! First, we painted pinecones in the traditional Christmas colours of red and green and they immediately looked like miniature Christmas trees; the only thing missing was the decorations. Our buddies helped us to glue on mini baubles and tinsel and we even popped some pretend snow underneath our tree (which was fitting given the weather we’ve had in Torquay this week!) We then created some beautifully colourful salt dough mosaic ornaments which we will be able to hang on our Christmas trees at home once they dry. A big thank you to Mr T and our Year 4 buddies. We have absolutely loved spending special time with you this year and appreciate all your help with the fun activities you have done with us!
Year 1 – It’s Beginning to Look a lot Like Christmas
This week, our young learners received a delightful surprise that has not only brought joy but has also ignited their enthusiasm for learning. In a magical turn of events, 1T and 1J were both the recipients of beautiful packages that arrived in the mail. To our absolute delight, it contained none other than our very own class elves! It seems that Santa Claus worked his holiday magic, responding swiftly to the heartfelt letters the Year 1s sent.
The classrooms are now abuzz with the excitement of caring for these special elves. The students have taken on the responsibility with gusto, showing remarkable care and creativity in looking after their magical companions. The presence of these elves has added a touch of wonder to our learning environment, making each day an adventure filled with curiosity and imagination.
What makes this experience even more special is the connection between the elves and the students’ ongoing learning journey. Our Year 1s have continued to fine-tune their skills and showcase incredible progress in various areas. From literacy to numeracy, the students are demonstrating a keen interest in their education, and the elves have become their silent partners in this exciting endeavour. To capture the magic and mischief, the students have embarked on a creative project – the ‘Elf Diaries’. Each child is diligently documenting the daily escapades and charming antics of their elf.
Plenty Happening as the Year’s end Draws Close
Dear God,
Where has this year gone? It is hard to believe that we are approaching the last week of school for 2023. Thank you for the wonderful students and families in Year 3 in 2023 and thank you for the amazing blessings and memories that we have created and shared together.
You would thing that things have slowed down as we approach the end of the year, but this couldn’t be further from the truth!
This week, the kids have been busy continuing their investigations into soil, rocks and minerals in our “Beneath our Feet” unit. We even made our own rocks!
We have been creating narrative stories and writing poetry. A very popular activity amongst the cohort.
Rehearsals for celebration evening are in full swing, the kids are making their own costumes in Art.
We have also been reflecting on their favourite moments throughout the year. It is quite an emotional rollercoaster when you think about it!
It doesn’t stop there. Next week we have carnival day, rehearsals, celebration evening and of course our last day of school.
Mrs Crole and Mr Stewart would like to congratulate all the kids on their effort this year and for being the beautiful little people that they are.
I truly hope that you all have a blessed Christmas, with lots of love and family. Please also be mindful of those who are less fortunate and help in any way you can.
Thank you for the support throughout the year. Until next year…. keep an eye on The Vine.
Year 5 Making the News!
As the finale to our term of learning all about the Victorian Gold Rushes, the Year 5 students have been working in groups to create a Newspaper. Each group had an editor and had to submit a number of articles about the things we had been learning. Articles included information about the Eureka Stockade, nuggets that were found, Peter Lalor and life on the goldfields.
These Newspapers turned out so well. Each of the students were able to be very proud of their involvements and the articles they wrote. I’m certain we have some budding journalists in Year 5!
Strike up the Band!
The Year 5 students have completed a full school year of learning a concert band instruments with wonderful results!
Aside from learning the basics of sound production and beginner techniques on instruments such as flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone and percussion, the overall experience has taught our students so much more.
Through our full concert band sessions, the students have been mastering the art of discipline, focus, listening with intent, following a conductor, ensemble playing and formal stage presence. Perhaps even more importantly, they have also experienced the highs and lows of a long-term relationship with a brand-new challenge and enriching hobby – what happens when the novelty wears off? What happens when new challenges occur? What happens when you suddenly realise that practice and repetition with a focused commitment is the only way to overcome and advance?
Along with pearls of wisdom from our fantastic visiting and highly experienced tutors, Kate Martin (clarinet), Andrew Dunlop (trumpet), Fiona Gardner (flute) and Rob Moffatt (trumpet), the students have been very busy this term preparing for our debut performance, as the opening act at the Celebration Evening at Costa Hall (next Thursday December 7).
Many students have also acknowledged a continuation of their instrument in 2024, which ensures the establishment of our official campus Concert Band! More details to follow in 2024!
Japanese – Well Done to the Year 5s!
