Telling and Retelling the Nativity Story
This week in Prep for Christian Education, we have had an enriching and joyful time exploring the Nativity and the significance of Christmas. The children have been deeply engaged in learning about the birth of baby Jesus, a story that holds great importance in our Christian faith. Over the past few weeks, we have unpacked different parts of the Nativity story, allowing the children to understand and appreciate the events leading up to and following the birth of Jesus.
The students have shown great enthusiasm in retelling the Nativity story in their own words. This exercise has not only helped them grasp the narrative but also encouraged them to express their understanding creatively. They have watched and listened to various stories about the birth of Jesus, which has provided them with a rich and diverse perspective on this pivotal event.
Overall, the children have loved learning about the Nativity and the significance of Christmas. Their excitement and curiosity have been evident throughout the week, and it has been wonderful to see them connect with this critical story in such a meaningful way. This week has truly been a celebration of learning and faith, and it has been a joy to witness the children’s growing understanding and appreciation of the Christmas story.
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Year 1! 🎅🎄
This week, we’re diving into the festive fun with our writing. We’ve been busy drafting and publishing letters to our Elf on the Shelf, who’s set to make his grand entrance next week! 🎁
We can’t wait to see all the mischief and magic our cheeky little elf brings. To get ready, we’ve been sharpening our writing skills—making sure every sentence is just right. From exciting exclamations to curious questions and clear statements, our letters are packed with personality!
Stay tuned to find out what tricks and surprises our elf will have in store! 🎄✨
Mastering the Art of Persuasive Writing
The Year 2 students have been diving into the formal processes of writing persuasive pieces, and their efforts are truly impressive! Each student has carefully planned their ideas, presenting compelling reasons and evidence to persuade their readers on a variety of topics.
From the spirited argument that “students should never have to learn to clean toilets” to the passionate claim that “AFL is better than rugby,” the students have tackled a wide range of subjects. Other interesting topics include “fast food is better than home-cooked food” and the debate over whether “the beach is clearly better than a pool.”
“Can you imagine the sense of accomplishment a Year 2 student feels when they publish their own persuasive piece?”
Throughout this process, the students have worked diligently to develop engaging rhetorical questions to draw in their readers. Now, they are in the crucial stages of editing their drafts, revising, and enhancing their work to ensure it is ready for publishing.
It’s been a fantastic journey watching these young writers hone their persuasive skills, and we can’t wait to see their final pieces!
Data, Chance, and Money Matters!
The Year 3 students have had an exciting few weeks in Mathematics, diving into the topics of data and statistics, chance, and money!
To start, our young mathematicians explored data and statistics, proposing interesting questions to gather categorical data from their classmates. They enjoyed finding out fun facts about their peers, such as favourite sports or most-loved ice cream flavours. Using their data, students created well-organised tables and transformed them into colourful and accurate graphs. Through these activities, they developed their data-handling skills and learned how to analyse their findings to spot trends and patterns.
Next, we moved on to the topic of chance where the Year 3s experimented with probability by tossing coins and recording the frequency of heads or tails. They discovered the magic of probability: while results may vary in small trials, collecting more data tends to bring outcomes closer to a 50/50 split. It was a fun, hands-on way to understand how chance works in the real world.
In addition to data and chance, we’ve also been consolidating our understanding of money. The Year 3 students have been getting to know Australian currency more closely, practising their skills in identifying coins and notes, and calculating total values. Creative activities have made learning both enjoyable and practical. These activities not only help build numeracy but also encourage students to think about how money is used in everyday life.
It’s been a wonderful time of curiosity, creativity, and collaboration, and we’re so proud of how the students are applying their growing mathematical knowledge!
Navigating Shark Island
Our Year 4 students have been hard at work on an engaging mathematical project this term that showcases their understanding and skills in location and mapping.
The project, centred around the fictional Shark Island, required students to design a detailed map following specific instructions on the island’s features and their locations. This hands-on activity allowed students to apply their knowledge of grid references, compass directions, and distances in a practical and fun way.
Students began by designing Shark Island, incorporating various features such as mountains, lakes, towns and forests. Each feature was carefully placed according to the given instructions, ensuring accuracy and creativity. This step not only enhanced their map-making skills but also their ability to follow detailed guidelines.
The students then planned a 10-step route to find a hidden treasure hidden on the island. Using precise location language, students mapped out their routes using grid references, compass directions, and distances. This exercise helped them understand the importance of clear and accurate directions in navigation.
This project has not only been educational but also immensely enjoyable for the students. The Year 4 teachers were greeted with a cheer each time we said the students could work on this task! We are incredibly proud of our students for their hard work and creativity in this project.
Year 5 Music Program – A Musical Milestone
Last week, the Year 5 students treated their families, and the Year 6 class, to a showcase of hard work and musical talent. After a year of dedicated learning with visiting instrumental tutors, the students demonstrated just how much they’ve achieved through several months of hard work and perseverance.
With almost every student in the class opting to try a concert band instrument (from flute, clarinet, trumpet to trombone), the Year 5s have been learning how the instruments work, basic sound production, note reading, listening with ‘musician ears’, and rehearsing together in an ensemble. Their performances included group pieces to highlight each instrument plus a collaborative rendition of the concert band chart, Kickstart!
The concert also featured a special performance by the Performers’ Workshop group, made up of Year 5 students who are already progressing on alternative instrument. This group have been working on a variety of pieces and have developed their sound as rhythm section players and lead vocalists. Their performance of 7 Nation Army gave the audience a small taste of the exciting work they’ve been doing throughout the year. These students also joined the Concert Band group as guest percussionists!
The concert was a celebration of the students’ journey in music, showing not just technical skills but also the confidence and discipline they’ve gained along the way. These lifelong skills will serve them well, whether they continue their studies on these instruments, or apply these lessons to other areas of life. This program has ignited a more unique passion for music that we hope will last a lifetime.
Congratulations to our Year 5 students on their fantastic achievements, and a special thank you to the instrumental tutors: Courtney Davey, Kate Martin, Kate Notini, Rob Moffatt and Andrew Dunlop; and to our families for their support!
Year 5 and 6 Coastal Bike Ride
The Year 5 and 6 students completed a 24km coastal bike ride last Friday. We were blessed with a beautiful sunny day, with a gentle south-easterly keeping the students cool. Students had completed numerous sessions at school during the Bike Ed program and were able to put their bike skills into practice. The focus of the program was to develop confidence and awareness when riding in a large group.
Many students were able to achieve success and demonstrate perseverance and resilience to complete the day long activity. We started from school, joining on the bike path through Jan Juc, up around the RACV Club and joining the Surf Coast path that led us along the coast all the way to Point Impossible. Students made stops at a couple of playgrounds for morning tea and lunch, enjoying an icy pole at lunchtime. We arrived ahead of schedule at Bob Pettit Reserve in Jan Juc with a lot of weary students.
The students were exceptional and cooperated well by supporting each other throughout the day. A big thank you to all the teachers and parents who contributed to the success of the day. A special thanks to Brad Morris for driving the bus, our wonderful parent helpers, Matt Long, Dave and Julia Spink, Dave Dunoon, Anthony Kamen, Aaron Cockram and Brad Hunter. I would also like to thank the school staff Claire and Jess Deretic, and Jo Clarke.
Well done to everyone who was involved. I hope this provides students with the motivation and skills to continue enjoying riding.

Baptist Camping Victoria - Holiday Camps
Over summer, and each school holidays, Baptist Camping Victoria (BCV) offers holiday camps for children aged between 8 and 18. These camps are held across Camp Wilkin and Burnside in Anglesea, and Mill Valley Ranch, in Tynong North. Each camp offers a unique holiday experience, in an environment that many of our College’s students may be familiar with from school camps during the term.
Camp Wilkin and Burnside host Family Camps over summer, with the opportunity to take the family away by the beach and create lasting memories using the BCV sites as a home base. See Family Camps - Baptist Camping.
At Mill Valley Ranch (MVR), alongside one Family Camp over the New Year period, children have an opportunity to be involved in Roundups. Roundups are age-group specific camps, tailored to provide opportunities to participate in horse riding, archery, mountain biking, swimming, and several other activities throughout the week.
Outside of attending as a camper, students over 15 years old have the opportunity to be involved as a volunteer leader. Leaders get to share their faith and grow their skills at Mill Valley Ranch, or at either Anglesea site. MVR also offers The Frontier for ages 14 and older, which is a leadership camp that runs at the same time as two Summer Roundups, this focuses specifically on developing the skills needed to be an effective volunteer leader.
If you are interested in learning more about each of the camps or volunteering opportunities available, head to this link: Baptist Camping. If you are keen to sign your student up for a camp, head to this link: EPIC - Baptist Camping. If your student might be interested in becoming a volunteer leader, you can find more information at either of the following links: Volunteer - Mill Valley Ranch - Baptist Camping or Volunteer – BCV – Angelsea - Baptist Camping.
I can personally testify to the value of these ministry camps available through BCV, and my experiences at Mill Valley Ranch developed many of the leadership skills I have today. I highly recommend investigating the opportunity to go on camp for your student, and I hope that the summer period is a wonderful time for you and your family.
