Creativity and Community at our First Art Show

On a beautiful sunny afternoon, our Surf Coast community came together to celebrate the artistic talents of our students at our very first Surf Coast Art Show. The grounds were filled with joyful families enjoying food trucks and relaxing across the lawn, setting the perfect scene for an afternoon of creativity and community.

Parents and visitors soon made their way inside to experience the incredible display of sculptures and artwork that our students have been working so hard to create. From intricate sculptures to vibrant paintings, each piece revealed the talent, effort, and imagination our young artists poured into their work. This show was a true testament to the skill and dedication of our students.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to every student who participated and helped make this inaugural art show a memorable event. Special thanks go to our dedicated art educators, Ms Jen Beck-Carlson and Mr Geoff Trevaskis, for the invaluable skills and love for art they are instilling in our students. Through their guidance, our young artists have truly begun to explore and embrace their creative potential.

Thank you to all who attended and made this day one to remember. We can’t wait to see what artistic wonders await us next year!

Geelong Mums (Our Village)

Next week we will be launching our next Project Care initiative. With the cost of living having a real impact on so many people in our greater community, we are going to support some of the people in greatest need.

Geelong Mums was established in 2013 by a small group of 5 local mums. Now, a large charity, Geelong Mums (Our Village) aims to reach as many young mothers and families as possible.

“We rehome essentials to give kids the best start in life. Our lives are impacted by our experiences in early childhood. The attachment between a child and their primary carer in the first 2000 days of life influences that child’s health, development and resilience. If there is economic, psychological and/or physical distress, the ability to develop this bond is at risk. We strive to alleviate these pressures and create the opportunity for every child to feel secure, safe and to thrive. Our goal is: by 2030, we will: Support every Victorian child up to the age of six that needs us. Reduce waste through the reuse of the things kids need.”

Prep Students Shine at School Art Exhibition

Our recent Surf Coast Art Show was a vibrant celebration of creativity, featuring the incredible talents of all of our Surf Coast students, including our fabulous Preps! The young artists showcased a delightful array of artwork that truly captured the essence of our beautiful seaside-meets-countryside location.

The exhibition featured fantastic self-portraits of the students at the beach, each one bursting with colour and personality. These portraits not only highlighted their artistic skills but also reflected their love for our stunning coastal surroundings.

In addition to the beach portraits, the Preps displayed gorgeous little bird creations and adorable cupcake designs. Each piece was crafted with meticulous attention to detail, showcasing the students’ imaginative and artistic abilities.

Exploring Ancient Egypt

This week, our Year 1 students have continued showing enthusiasm for their exploration of Ancient Egypt. They’ve been especially captivated by learning about the pharaohs, understanding not only their role as leaders but also their god-like status among the people. It’s been amazing to see our learners grasp how integral the pharaohs were to Egyptian society and faith. They’ve also enjoyed drawing connections to our previous study on Mesopotamia, recognising the importance of farming and the need for a stable food supply in sustaining civilisations. This comparison has deepened their understanding of how early communities thrived along major rivers, with farming at the heart of their growth. Watching students make these connections has been a delight; their curiosity and engagement in learning about the past continue to inspire rich discussions and a love for history.

Year 2 Students Explore the Wonders of the Solar System

The past few weeks the Year 2 students have been on an exciting journey diving deep into the mysteries of the Solar System. Their adventure began with an engaging hands-on learning experience during a visit to Scienceworks, where they explored interactive exhibits and participated in activities that brought the wonders of space to life. Back in the classroom, the students channelled their newfound knowledge into creating detailed Solar System model.

Research Projects: Diving Deeper into Planetary Science

The students are now delving deeper into planetary science through individual research projects by gathering information to include in their information reports. They are exploring fascinating facts about planets, such as atmospheric conditions, surface features, and any known moons. This research is helping them develop critical thinking and research skills, as well as a deeper appreciation for the complexity of our solar system.

Year 3 Busy Bees!

Well…. It has been the most amazing and incredibly varied couple of weeks in Year 3! With only 5 weeks to go, it has been full steam ahead!

We have been studying poetry in Literacy and recognising structure, language features and audience.

In Maths we have been learning about capacity and volume. The kids had fun creating their perfect Jazzy Juices by measuring the exact quantities of each juice they needed to suit their taste buds. Not surprisingly, the tomato juice wasn’t very popular!

For Science, we have been learning about the Earth beneath us and the students have been collecting soil and rock samples from various locations, making soil solutions and examining composition and purpose.

Geography has helped us to learn about what a special place Australia is, and some of the amazing natural features in our backyard.

Finally, in Christian Ed we have continued our study of the book of John and the miracles that Jesus performed.

Still a LOT more to look forward to before the year is out so until next time…. Keep an eye on The Vine 😊

Further Fractions Fun!

This week, our Year 4 students have continued to be immersed in the world of fractions, jumping into the fascinating concepts of equivalent fractions, tenths as mixed numerals and decimals, and creative ways to represent decimals. Using tools like the ten-grid, students explored how decimals work and found that fractions aren’t as intimidating as they once thought!

Our classroom has been buzzing with rich discussions, with students excitedly sharing their discoveries and strategies. Their positive attitude toward deepening their understanding has been inspiring, and their enthusiasm was best summed up by one student’s comment: “This is so fun! Can we do more fractions tomorrow?”

We have also been focusing on developing our skills with solving challenging worded problems. There is one in the photos that was a little tricky and required careful reading and planning to solve successfully. Well done to the students for working together to discuss and attack this deceptive problem.
