Grandparents’ Day

Grandparents’ Day is always a cherished event at our Surf Coast Campus, and this year was no exception. For the first time, we celebrated in our new stadium, which was nearly filled with excited children and their beloved grandparents. The students were thrilled to share this new space, enjoying an afternoon of fun, laughter, and meaningful connections.

Our grandparents had the joy of singing and dancing with their grandchildren, followed by time spent in classrooms engaging in games and craft activities. Days like this are truly a blessing, and we eagerly anticipate the next opportunity to celebrate with these special members of our community.

Final Beach Prep Discovery Learning Session

Our last discovery learning session for the year was truly magical, as we ventured to the Cosy Corner under a radiant sun and a clear blue sky. The crystal-clear water gently lapped at the Preppies’ feet, inviting them to explore and play. Their excitement was palpable as they discovered mini fish, shellfish, and crabs hidden in the sand. With boundless creativity, they built intricate palaces and castles, imagining homes for their newfound sea friends.

The beach was filled with the sounds of giggles, fun, and laughter, creating an atmosphere of pure joy. The children’s enthusiasm was infectious, and it was heartwarming to see them so engaged and happy. They worked together, sharing ideas and helping each other, which made the experience even more special.

As the session ended, it was clear that this beach trip was the perfect way to finish off our discovery learning for 2024. The memories of this day will surely stay with the children, reminding them of the wonders of nature and the joy that God’s creations bring. It was a day filled with exploration, creativity, and camaraderie, making it a fitting end to a fantastic year of discovery.

Coastal Connections at Cosy Corner

This week, the Year 1 crew hit up Cosy Corner for some beachside exploration! We’ve been learning all about the weather and how it shapes our environment, so it was awesome to see it in action. We checked out the sand dunes, cliffs, and rocks, and discovered how erosion works its magic thanks to the weather. We’ll be heading back two more times this term to see how the area changes with the weather over time. What an amazing day to soak up the sun and enjoy the beach 😊

ScienceWorks!

Year 2s visited ScienceWorks to explore all things science-related and to see the Earth, Moon and Sun Show. We learnt about how the moon and sun influence life on earth, changing our seasons, and creating day and night. Everyone loved exploring the general exhibition designing environmentally friendly cars, racing Cathy Freeman down the straight, and testing our physical strength in the sports exhibition. Some of the amazing activities included becoming a robot, saving the environment, creating light patterns and racing a robot hand. In the space exhibit, we loved the spaceship, the portal where we disappeared and the stretchy galaxy pictures. What an amazing day!

Putting Measurement Skills Into Practice!

This term, our Year 3 students have been exploring the concepts of mass and capacity in their Mathematics lessons. They’ve been busy weighing objects in grams and kilograms, as well as measuring liquids in millilitres and litres. To put their knowledge to the test, the students took over the science lab, engaging in hands-on experiments with different capacities. Working in pairs or small groups, they estimated and checked their measurements, comparing results and learning through practical discovery. It was wonderful to see the students’ enthusiasm as they strengthened their collaboration skills and applied their mathematical understanding in a fun and interactive way.

On Wednesday, many of the Year 3 students had the chance to share some special time with their grandparents on Grandparents’ Day. They proudly showed their loved ones around the school and took part in some enjoyable activities together, creating cherished memories and highlighting the importance of family in our school community. It was a heartwarming experience for all involved!

Year 4s Shine in Narrative Writing

Our Year 4 students have been diligently honing their narrative writing skills, and their hard work is truly paying off! Delving into the classic text, The Velveteen Rabbit, they drew inspiration from this beloved story to create their own narratives.

Focusing on the character of the Skin Horse, the students crafted tales that explore how this special toy also became real. Through their writing, they have skilfully incorporated sophisticated vocabulary and descriptive language, bringing their stories to life with vivid detail and emotion.

These narratives are now being transformed into beautiful picture story books, which we are eagerly looking forward to sharing with our Prep buddies. It will be a wonderful opportunity for our Year 4s to showcase their creativity and for our younger students to enjoy these imaginative stories.

We are incredibly proud of the effort and dedication our Year 4 students have demonstrated.

Exploring Global Cuisines

As Term 4 kicks off, our Year 6 students are continuing their exciting journey in Food Technology, this time focusing on foods from around the world. Students have been learning and trialling more complex cooking methods, expanding their culinary skills. It’s been wonderful to see the growth in their kitchen confidence and their ability to clean as they go – a skill we hope will transfer to their home kitchens! A big thank you to Mrs Workman for stepping in during Mr T’s absence and supporting our growing chefs.

Japanese: Different Pathways to Learning

The Prep students are learning about sea animals in Japanese this term. They have very quickly learnt the names of the seven different animals by using multiple methods of loading this information in their long-term memory. They learn how to say, sing, read, write, draw and make a hand gesture for each word. By using various ways, the children can use a variety of different “paths” back to their memory to find the correct word. We have trialled this method in learning farm animals in Term 3 and it worked very well.  It offers the children a choice of finding the best pathway for them or possibly using more than one. The special hand gestures often act as a trigger to remembering the information as they have a connection to the word. For example, wiggling eight fingers upside down reminds them of the octopus tentacles and then they quickly access the Japanese word tako in their memory. It is a very effective, efficient but most importantly fun way to learn and retain new words. We will keep on practising and working hard in Japanese.
