Father’s Day Celebrations
The atmosphere at our Surf Coast Campus was filled with excitement on Wednesday afternoon as fathers and their children gathered for an enjoyable and memorable event. The afternoon featured the Surf Coast Dads Sports Extravaganza, where fathers and their children teamed up to participate in various activities, including soccer, basketball, sack races, three-legged races, and a highly anticipated tug of war. The camaraderie and competitive spirit were a joy to witness.
Adding to the day’s enthusiasm, our annual Fathers’ Day Stall provided children with the opportunity to thoughtfully select gifts for their fathers. The excitement was palpable as children carefully chose their presents, quickly tucking them away in their school bags to ensure they remained a surprise until Sunday.
We would like to take this opportunity to wish all our fathers a wonderful and blessed Father’s Day.
Year 6 Comes to Prep
A heartwarming event unfolded when the Year 6 students surprised the Preps with a special gift. The Year 6s had spent all year meticulously crafting, shaping, and sanding wooden toys that could move. Each toy was unique, reflecting the creativity and dedication of its maker. To add a personal touch, the Year 6 students also sewed beautiful bags for the toys to live in, ensuring that each Prep had a safe and special place to keep their new treasures.
When the Preps received their gifts, their faces lit up with amazement and joy. They were in awe of the quality and care that had gone into making each toy. The intricate details and the smooth finish of the toys were a testament to the hard work and love the Year 6 students had poured into this project. The Preps couldn’t stop admiring their new toys and were deeply appreciative of the effort their older peers had put into creating something so special for them.
This gesture not only brought immense happiness to the Preps but also fostered a sense of community and connection between the different year levels. The Year 6 students felt a sense of pride and accomplishment, knowing that their hard work had brought so much joy to the younger students. It was a beautiful example of how acts of kindness and creativity can bring people together and create lasting memories.
Year 1’s First Big Camp Adventure!
This week, our brave Year 1 students embarked on their very first camp adventure, and what a fantastic journey it was! We set off to Camp Wilkin in Anglesea, ready for a few days filled with fun, excitement, and a little bit of thrill-seeking.
As soon as we arrived, the excitement was buzzing! The kids couldn’t wait to settle into their cozy cabins and find out which group they were in for the activities. After a quick tour around the camp, we had some free time to explore, and then it was straight into our rotations.
The first challenge? The Giant Flying Fox! Some of us were a bit nervous, but with a little encouragement from our friends, everyone had a go. We zoomed through the air, laughing and cheering each other on. Next up was the Low Ropes Course, where we balanced, climbed, and worked together to get through some tricky obstacles. The Initiative Games really tested our teamwork and problem-solving skills, but we were up for the challenge!
That evening, we gathered around a roaring campfire, perfect for roasting marshmallows. Sticky fingers and big smiles were everywhere as we enjoyed our sweet treats under the stars. The night ended with a cozy movie in the Rec Room, a perfect way to wind down after a day full of adventures.
On the second day, we hit the beach! The sun was shining, and the sand was perfect for building the most amazing sandcastles. We formed teams, grabbed our buckets and spades, and let our imaginations run wild. The kids had a blast playing games and creating incredible sand masterpieces. The laughter, teamwork, and new friendships made it an unforgettable day.
As the camp came to an end, it was clear that Year 1 had conquered their first camp with flying colors. We all had so much fun, made wonderful memories, and can’t wait for the next adventure!
Exciting Maths
This week, our Year 2 students have been thoroughly enjoying their Maths activities. They’ve been mastering multiplication with the 2-, 5-, and 10-times tables, and have just started exploring the 3-times table. Additionally, they’ve been busy creating informal tape measures, comparing and ordering objects by length, and honing their skills in estimating and measuring lengths to the nearest meter. It’s been a week full of hands-on learning and mathematical fun!
The students have also been practising a range of worded maths problems, working in small teams to solve them. This collaborative approach has helped them develop their problem-solving skills and learn from each other, making Maths both fun and engaging.
Keep up the great work year 2s!
Camp Wyuna Part 1
Abuzz with excitement, the Year 3 students headed down to Camp Wyuna on Monday morning. Nestled in the sand dunes, just outside of the quaint, seaside town of Queenscliff, Camp Wyuna was the perfect camp destination for our Year 3s. The first day was filled to the brim with camp activities, food and fun. We wandered down to the beach and small groups worked together to create an imaginative sand sculpture. The students voted for their favourite, and the winning entry was an impressive boat made from compacted sand with a frisbee for a steering wheel and it even boasted a comfy seat for its captain! There were plenty of free time activities and the children made the most of the different ball games, quiet play areas and places for imaginative play. We visited the Marine and Freshwater Discovery Centre where the students had an opportunity to see and touch some marine animals and plant life, as well as expand their biological science knowledge. After a hearty dinner, we toasted marshmallows in the fire pit and made it into bed at a reasonable hour … though, we can’t say in all truthfulness that the children fell asleep at a reasonable hour!! School camps are always much too fun for sleeping!
Stay tuned for an update on the rest of our camp in the Vine next week …
Busy Days in Year 4
Our Year 4 students have been diligently preparing for the upcoming Science Expo, focusing their efforts on our ‘Mysteries of the Deep’ interdisciplinary unit. Each student has selected a sea creature to research, delving into its habitat, appearance, diet, behaviour and threats.
Their findings will be showcased in an interactive PowerPoint presentation, complete with hyperlinks and videos. Additionally, students have crafted impressive sea creature models during Art, demonstrating remarkable care and attention to detail.
To further enrich their learning, students have created informative posters about the world’s oceans using Canva. These posters are not only visually appealing but also packed with accurate and detailed information.
We are incredibly proud of the hard work and creativity our students have shown. We eagerly anticipate sharing their fantastic projects with the broader school community at next week’s Science Expo!
Konnichiwa! Good afternoon!
Year 4s are learning about life in Japanese schools and comparing it to our school.
We have also learned how to say some rooms in Japanese, for example, the Japanese room is “Nihingo no Kyoushitsu”.
Students are creating our school sign in Japanese in PowerPoint and are also making a video to introduce themselves.
Yokudekimashita. Well done!
Suzuki sensei
Deakin District Athletics
We had 29 Year 4-6 students represent Surf Coast Campus at the Deakin District Athletics Championships at Goldsworthy Reserve in Corio on Thursday. Students persevered well throughout the day in trying conditions participating in a variety of track and field events.
All students competed well in their events, with a few students completing up to five events on the day including Gracie Newman-King, John Bechis and Edward Clark.
Well done to all of the students that competed and we hope the students can keep enjoying the opportunity to participate in future events.
The End of Designing New Futures
This semester, our Year 6 students been working incredibly hard on a project of designing and constructing a pull toy out of wood. Over the terms, students honed their woodworking skills, from initial design concepts to the final polish, creating unique and functional toys they can be proud of.
The students then transitioned from the workshop to the sewing room. They crafted beautifully sewn bags, each one a testament to their growing confidence and skill in textiles.
The project culminated in a heartwarming moment as the Year 6 students presented their handcrafted bags to their Prep buddies. This gesture not only allowed them to share their accomplishments but also fostered a sense of mentorship and connection between the older and younger students.
This semester-long project has been an incredible journey of learning, creativity, and community for our Year 6 students. Well done to everyone involved!
School Crossing Supervisors are Needed

Wellbeing - Catch a Webinar, and a Movie!
A positive, supportive and healthy learning community is essential to children and young people achieving optimal wellbeing, no matter their developmental stage and as highlighted by BeYou, everyone has a role to play. Schools can ensure that educators, other professionals working with the learning community, and families have access to the resources and support they need. They can also ensure that: educators can foster mental health and wellbeing within the boundaries of their role; families can collaborate with educators and the school to support the needs of their young people; local community organisations, where appropriate, can support and be supported by the school and families; and young people can be empowered to actively build and develop strategies to foster their own wellbeing.
As part of our ongoing commitment to the significant role we as a College community play in supporting the flourishing of children and young people in our care, we warmly invite you to two events:
The first, a parent/carer online webinar ‘Supporting adolescent wellbeing’ held on Tuesday September 10 at 6:30pm, which includes two presentations from key experts in their field. Dr James Burl from Blurred Minds will offer valuable insights in his presentation titled ‘Vaping Decoded – Empowering Parents in the vaping conversation’. With over five years’ experience in delivering alcohol, vaping and drug education to schools James will share information to empower parents to have more relevant conversations with their teen around vaping, given parents are one of the most important protective factors when it comes to preventing teenage vaping. Jaimee Dunlop, Senior Mental Health Professional at Bellarine Community Health/ Headspace will also join us to share valuable advice on how to recognise early signs of psychological distress in young people and how to initiate a conversation around mental health. We will also hear from our College Director of Digital Learning, Brendan Vanderkley, about exciting updates to our parent tools and features to support adolescent digital wellbeing and positive digital engagement.

The second, a private screening for Christian College families to see the Disney/Pixar film ‘Inside Out 2’ at the Pivotonian in Geelong on Wednesday September 11 at 5:00pm.
“The main messages from Inside Out 2 are that we can’t let emotions control us or determine who we are, and we aren’t defined by single memories but rather by a deep sense of who we know ourselves to be” – Raising Children network.
Tickets are $12 per person (plus booking and processing fee) and are available to purchase by clicking on this link . The Try Booking page for Inside Out 2 is also accessed via the hotlink at the top of the Christian College website homepage.
We look forward to seeing you then!
Keyboard Capers! All Campus Piano Day
On Thursday last week close to 90 piano students from five campuses gathered at the RW Gibson Centre for a day of activities, performances and master classes.
Years 3 to 9 from Surfcoast, Highton, Bellarine and Junior School arrived by bus and started with an exciting and fun filled body percussion session, led by Jacqui Anderson. During this time students were challenged with coordination games and cross rhythms; skills that are essential to develop for every pianist! They also listened to a performance by the Junior School Percussion Ensemble. Percussion playing is a popular pathway for piano students to experience ensemble playing.
After a morning tea break, the students had the opportunity to perform for each other and for Mrs Lesley Walters, one of this year’s guest tutors, who gave valuable feedback on the essentials to set up a proper technique and performance practice. It was wonderful to hear so many performances of various levels. Students also had the opportunity to take part in a scale competition which was very exciting, three prizes were awarded. Thank you to everyone who entered this fun activity; we all know how essential it is to practise our scales!
At lunchtime the Senior piano students joined in and we all were privileged to listen to Kym Dillon perform four of her own piano works Vanishing Act, A Sound of Bells, Open Road and The Rain’s coming. Kym gave us an insight into these compositions, explaining her motivation and composition techniques. It would be right to say that everyone was inspired by Kym’s talent and skills as a composer and pianist.
During the afternoon sessions, the Senior pianists and composition students attended a lecture by composer Matthew Hindson. Matthew’s works are performed worldwide and he is a senior lecturer in composition at the Conservatorium for Music in Sydney.
Matthew introduced composition techniques of well know film scores by composers such as Ludovico Einaudi. He then explained his own cycle of Sad Piano Music, a beautiful collection of 13 piano pieces he composed during the time of Covid. Finally, our Senior students were guided by him in writing a piece themselves.
Following this lecture, Andrea Lam, world class pianist who lives in Melbourne and lectures at the University of Melbourne, listened to our Senior piano students perform a piece from their current repertoire, with each receiving valuable feedback in form of a mini masterclass lesson. Andrea in her teaching and brilliance at the piano was generous, encouraging and nurturing of our students, with each walking away from the experience having new things to consider in their musical artistry.
The day concluded with a public evening recital by Andrea Lam in collaboration with Matthew Hindson at the Gibson Centre. She performed some of Matthew’s Sad Piano Pieces, as well as Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata and a Chopin Nocturne. Andrea’s playing is sublime, every note is shaped beautifully and touches the listener. Together they transformed the auditorium into the most beautiful place, taking the audience on a special journey. Matthew’s sharing of the background of his compositions, and their open interaction/collaboration sharing their ideas, feelings and motivations was a privilege to experience.
What a day! Thank you to everyone who participated and to all the staff and their wonderful work to bring everything together and make it a great success.
Keep practising your piano!
Coming Soon: Exciting Update to Qustodio Parent App
Extended Parent Features in Qustodio for School Devices
Since the introduction of our Cyber Safe Schools Program in 2022, in partnership with Linewize, we have been able to aid parents at home to engage with and support their children in their digital journey on both school and personal devices.
The Qustodio Parent App, as one element of our program, has empowered parents to supervise their children’s use of school devices at home, pause internet and access expert advice via our Online Safety Hub. Until now, an expanded feature set has only been available to parents when managing personal devices also.
However, coming in early September, parents will soon have the following extended features for school laptops at home, as part of our standard school program:
- Schedule your child’s screen-free times
- Create custom routines (e.g. study, sleep and play)
- Apply custom web filtering rules (as an extra layer on top of our school’s 24/7 base level safety filtering)
- Apply app and game time and access limits
