Student Digital Safety Forum for Parents/Guardians and Staff

Do you ever worry about your young person’s online behaviour and safety?

Do you have a clear understanding of the legalities surrounding digital image production, sharing and requesting, for young people?

Would you like to know if other families have the same questions, experiences, challenges and concerns as you?

As our young people continue to grow up and learn within a ‘technological age’, their digital safety remains a critical focus for staff at Christian College Geelong, as I am sure it does for you at home. As per my recent email, and as part of our strategy to partner genuinely and comprehensively with you in their nurturing, I warmly invite you to our upcoming Student Digital Safety Forum for Parents/Guardians, Staff and Victoria Police.

This important event will be held in the Christian College Middle School – Highton Library on Wednesday, June 14, from 5:45pm-7:15pm. All parents and guardians from Year 4 to Year 12 are invited to attend

Surf Coast Preps Know how to be Good Sports

In the lead up to our Preppies’ first ever whole school sports event on Tuesday (the Surf Coast campus cross country), we spent some time discussing what it means to be a “good sport”. Our Preps were able to provide some wonderful examples such as cheering on others, congratulating others when they do well, not being upset if you don’t win and always setting out to have fun. We also reflected upon the wonderful message from the story of The Speedy Sloth, which we read recently for National Simultaneous Storytime – always try your best and never give up!

On the day of the race, our Preps were excited to be placed in their house groups with students from other year levels. It was fantastic to see our Preps spending the day with the older students and cheering on their fellow runners along the home straight. One of the absolute highlights of the day was one of the Preps saying to us “I’m proud of myself today. I really tried my best!”

Well done Preppies, you should ALL be very proud of your efforts at your first ever Surf Coast campus cross country event!

Year 1 – The Art of Writing

Over this term, we have been looking at lots of different text types and how they can be used. We had the opportunity to write a descriptive piece, letters and moving forward procedural texts.

Our writing focuses on using proper sentence structure, creativity and detail to ensure we entertain our readers. We had the opportunity to write beautiful letters to teachers at school, before moving on to writing letters to children in Tanzania. Letter writing was the perfect way to link to our Integrated Studies topic looking at history as this was one of the main forms of communication back then. We are eager to see what we have up next for our learning and cannot wait to share some stories with you along the way.

All Things Fractions

The Year 3 students have been working together to explore all things fractions. They have been discussing what is true and what is false about fractions, and they have been busy making fraction walls to understand equivalent fractions, and to help them understand the value of various fractions. Having completed a recent unit on multiplication and division, the students have discovered that division is closely related to fractions, and they are applying their understanding to this new unit of work.

Together with addition and subtraction practice, the Year 3 students are also working on designing their own garden space as we begin to learn more about space, maps, and a ‘bird’s-eye-view’. This area of learning complements our literacy unit where the students are following the stories of the inhabitants of ‘My Place’, with each story accompanied by a bird’s-eye-view of a map of the local area. The students are practising their direction and location skills by describing the position of selected landmarks and suggesting various routes to get from one place to another.

Back to fractions, though … maybe you could check if their fraction skills are up to par by asking your child to share out a chocolate bar with a friend or sibling and see if there are any sneaky ‘bigger’ halves!!

It’s All Go in Year 5

It seems like we never stop running in Year 5. Our days a very full and busy, with school work, sport and fun with friends. Over the last 2 weeks we have taken part in Reconciliation week, continuing to learn about our history and that of our First Nations. As part of this the Year 5 students talked about things that have been passed down through their family, completing a “Footprints in History” task. They have also done oral presentations about a significant Indigenous person and the impact they have had on Australia.

We have taken part in our annual Cross Country. It was so much fun to have the whole school together for this. I was so proud of all of my Year 5 students, for their positive attitudes, their resilience and their determination. Congratulations to those who placed in their race, but even more, congratulations to those who find it challenging and gave it a red hot go.

We are busy working on our Food Truck project in Maths and can’t wait to show everyone.

PE Happenings

This semester students in Prep to Year 3 have been working on developing their Fundamental Motor Skills (FMS).

Preps – Locomotor (run, dodge, jump and leap) & Catch

Year 1– Locomotor & Underarm throw/Catch

Year 2 – Locomotor & Strike

Year 3 – Locomotor & Overhand throw

Our Year 4 & 5 students have enjoyed focusing on athletics, fitness, basketball and netball.

Our younger students spend much of their PE time focusing on the 11 FMS in preparation for minor and major games in the upper primary years.

The Prep students recently enjoyed a rotation of catching activities using various types of equipment to encourage the development of all ‘Catch’ components.

Students are encouraged to practise their skills at home with siblings and/or parents. Ask your child to tell you the components (parts of) the skill they have been focusing on.

Please enjoy the photos of our Preps in action.

A Super-Sized String Ensemble

This week saw the Junior String Ensembles from Surf Coast, Junior School and Bellarine gather together for a fun day of combined music making. The enthusiastic students were brought together in the Bellarine Auditorium to form a super-sized String Ensemble of over 50 students, which rehearsed two pieces before a short break, during which the students from different campuses got to mingle with their fellow string buddies.

We then resumed playing with some individual group performances, before our excited audience of Year 1 and 2 Bellarine students arrived to hear the combined string group perform the catchy Jamaican tune “Tingo Layo” and the stately ‘March of the Astronauts’, followed by a rousing rendition of an Irish folk tune ‘Forty Pound Float’ used in the Bluey episode, ‘Fairies’ – a definite crowd favourite!

It was wonderful to see these young musicians perform together so seamlessly and participate so fully. We look forward to presenting these two pieces for families and friends at the Spring into Strings evening scheduled for later in term three.

Thanks to: Jeannette Carnie, cello teacher and director of the Bellarine Junior String ensemble; the piano accompaniment staff of Stephanie Lawrence and Tammy Treloar who assisted with rehearsals; String teachers Rebecca Bertoncello (violin) and Caitie Martin (cello) and to Lesley Walters, who stepped out of retirement to help us on the day. Thanks also to Junior School Music teacher Laura Hollingsworth for assisting with supervision and to Master chef Mr Gary Crole who cooked all the sausages for our lunch time sausage sizzle.

Taylor House Takes Cross Country Honours!

On Tuesday afternoon, we were blessed with sunshine and perfect running conditions for our House Cross Country Championship.

After weeks of training and preparation, students were keen to run to the best of their ability in the hope of becoming House champions.

Our campus community came together at Bellbrae Reserve for opening proceedings and race day instructions.

The students enjoyed running the cross-country course through the bushland with spectators and teachers amazed by the running efforts of the students.

Students took off in their year levels with speed, down to the oval before heading out onto the bush track.

Our students displayed resilience, perseverance, and determination and it was inspiring to watch. From the littlest Preps to the fastest Year 5 students, from runners in the top three places, to those further back in the field, everyone is to be congratulated on doing their best.
