Year 5 Update

We have started the term sinking our teeth into early settlement of Australia. The students have been immersing themselves in documentaries, interactive games and picture story books to spark their creativity and understanding of Australian history.

Excitement has been building among this fantastic cohort about our English assessment that requires them to create a historical narrative picture story book. Their ideas have been bouncing around the room as they have developed skills around different sentence types and ways to showcase their imagination in a creative, yet structured manner.

Finally, with the Olympics kicking off today, we have wrapped the unit in the green and gold through our reading challenge, developed by our amazing library staff, and our chance and data unit. Looking at probability, chance and data, we look forward to weaving in some national pride as we utilise the data from the Olympics to develop our knowledge.

Also coming up for our 5s is Book Week and the Prime Minister’s Spelling Bee, later this term, as well as many more learning opportunities inside and out of the classroom!

Victorian School Netball Championship

The Christian College Year 7 and 8 Junior Netball team had a very successful day at Kardinia Park on Tuesday 22 July. The 11 girls who represented our school from both Bellarine and Highton put on an excellent display of strong, competitive highly skilled netball. The girls won all their eight games to progress through to the Victorian School Girls Final to be held in Melbourne at the State Netball Centre on Tuesday 27 August. We will face tough competition, but we have excellent depth in our team and our players continually encourage and back each other up.

Qustodio Parent App

Supervise and Support Your Children on Digital Devices

This week we have communicated with all families who have a child who enrolled with us as a new student in 2024. These parents have received an email invitation and guide to activate their Qustodio parent account as part of our school program. For families who have been with us through Semester 1 this was a follow-up invitation.

A reminder to parents that the Qustodio Parent App is available to all our parents to help them supervise and support their children with their online and digital interactions at home, on the school device and on personal devices.

While parents of new students to the College have received an email invitation to activate their Qustodio parent account, any parents in our community who have not yet done so can activate their account at any time if they wish. This help document will guide you in getting started.

In addition, these short video guides may be helpful:

I hope that parents will value and benefit from this tool available through our school program, and to regularly explore our Online Safety Hub for support articles and resources intended especially for parents.

Seeking Christian College Company Members

Christian College Geelong is seeking expressions of interest from any parent or guardian interested in becoming a new Company Member.

Company Members play an important part in the governance structure and protection of the College. A number of positions on the Christian College Board are filled by company members, depending on the skillset required when vacancies arise, and it is the company members who have the responsibility of voting to pass any amendments to the Christian College constitution. Company members may also be eligible to sit on various committees involved in the governance of the College.

Whilst participating as a company member is not overly onerous, it needs to be pointed out that the position is voluntary and not remunerated in any way. Also, please understand an expression of interest does not guarantee automatic membership of the company.

If you have a heart for the College, and feel you would have the time to dedicate and an interest in this role, please contact the Company Secretary, Bernard Nicholls at b.nicholls@ccg.vic.edu.au. All expressions of interest must be submitted by COB Friday, August 2.

National Collection of Data on Students With a Disability

Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). With data collected on the first Friday in August (August 5 this year), the NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability.

These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD Guidelines.

Please see the attached NCCD Fact Sheet for more information.
