Car Park Safety

In the interests of safety for our students near vehicles at Junior School Belmont, we are seeking your assistance. Please be reminded that the roundabout is NOT to be used for daily general student drop off and pick up. The exception to this being Strings at 8:00am on a Tuesday morning and Choir at 8:00am on a Wednesday morning. If your child has an appointment between the hours of 9:30am-3:00pm you are welcome to use the front roundabout for pick up and drop off as this will not generally impact student safety.

Additionally, it has come to our attention recently that some families are using the carpark near our maintenance shed at the rear of the property to drop off and pick up students. Please be advised that this area is for staff parking only. You are welcome to park or drop off/pick up in Dumfries Court however we respectfully request that you do not use or enter through the staff carpark.

Thank you once again for your efforts in considering our children’s safety in the school grounds.

Our Village – Single bedsheet drive

As we continue to support the work of Our Village (Geelong Mums) here at Junior School, over the next few weeks, we are collecting single bed fitted sheets, an incredibly practical and in-need item for families within the community seeking support.

Should you have any single bed sheets that are no longer being used and are still in good condition, you are invited to drop these off in the collection box in the Junior School foyer over the next few weeks. During week 9, these sheets will be donated to Our Village (Geelong Mums) by some of our Project Care Leaders.

Our ongoing relationship with Our Village offers students the opportunity to be involved in caring for others in practical and tangible ways. Thank you again for your consistent support, it has been so wonderful to see how the donations from our community help others in need.

Experimenting With the Viscosity of Liquids

In our chemical science unit during Interdisciplinary Learning lessons this term, the Year 2 students have been investigating everyday materials and how they can physically change in a variety of ways when manipulated.

Through various experiments we have explored the concept that materials can change through bending, stretching and twisting motions and students explored these concepts of through various classroom-based investigations.

The Year 2 students also explored further the concept that materials have different uses that suit different purposes. This scientific analysis began by learning new vocabulary associated with materials and then conducting scientific experiments to test their theories about absorbency and elasticity of materials.

The students delved further this week examining and testing the viscosity of liquids; how much solid is in a liquid. We learnt that substances that have a high viscosity have a slow flow rate and those that had a low viscosity had a fast flow rate. The students selected six everyday household substances to test, setting up a race between all the liquids.

As a class there were in depth discussions about why it is important to test materials in these ways and the importance and relevance of this knowledge in gaining further scientific knowledge and how this impacts our everyday life.

The opportunity to explore materials through experimentation provided the acquisition of new knowledge and understandings through hands-on investigations. The students were extremely engaged in our inquiries, which also fostered teamwork and the opportunity to explore social friendships further.

World Rivers are Flowing in Year 3!

In 3G we completed our information reports on a significant world river, some of the world’s rivers we wrote about include the Nile, the longest river, which flows through Africa, and the Amazon, the largest by water volume, which runs through South America. We’ve learned that rivers are fascinating natural wonders that flow across our planet, and they are an essential part of the Earth’s ecosystem.

We’ve learned their source is usually a small stream or springs in mountains or hills and they grow larger as they collect water from rainfall, melting snow, or other streams. Rivers provide vital resources for humans and wildlife, offering fresh water for drinking, irrigation for agriculture, and industry. They also create habitats for a diverse range of plants and animals.

They are also a source of beauty and recreation, inspiring artists and offering activities like fishing, boating, and swimming, some of us even shared that we spend holidays on the Murray River, Australia’s longest river. Learning about rivers has helped us appreciate the importance of protecting these precious waterways for future generations.

What a Book Week This Year!

It is always such a thrill to see our students at Junior School and Williams House take part in the annual Book Week parade. We had challenging weather conditions this year but pushed on regardless. As we danced our way around the basketball courts and admired others’ costumes the rain held off and joy was evident as always.

A big thank you to Mr Horman for the music and to Mr Foran who assisted with special comments. The winning books were announced, Gymnastia Fantastica! by Briony Stewart and Timeless by Kelly Canby.

This year we added a fundraiser element to our Book Week celebrations with The Great Book Swap. We were delighted to raise over $460 for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. This was a College-wide initiative that we took part in.

Finally, on Thursday, our Year 1 classes were treated to a visiting clown magic show. This is linked with this year’s theme Reading is Magic. There was great joy and wonder as we were entertained by our guest clown.
