Dressed for Success
Bellarine Year 9 Transformation student Caitlin Bell wanted to raise awareness for Women’s rights and the impact inequality has on women all around the world. The Dress for Success foundation is a worldwide charity, with a focus on empowering women to achieve economic independence by providing a network of support, professional attire and the development tools to help women thrive in work and in life. The foundation also helps women escape dangerous situations and get themselves back on their feet.
The foundation purely believes that every woman has the right to realise her full potential and achieve financial independence in an ever-changing world. Dress For Success believes that by offering women access to career advancement, financial education, and a supportive community, it will enable her to generate sustained improvement in all aspects in her life, regardless of background or any current challenges. The Bellarine staff showed their support by dressing in their pinkest outfit for the day and enjoyed the morning tea provided by Caitlin.
Cooking in the Kitchen – Community Service
It has been so wonderful this year that our two ESOs, Paula Baker and Hayley Castle, organise small groups of cooking volunteers from Years 5 and 6. Bean Break@Bellarine funded the costs of ingredients and in return students in their lunchtime learnt how to make easy slice recipes and were able to taste their products. Bean Break then cheaply sold the products for students and teachers to enjoy with their hot chocolates and coffees. I sincerely thank Paula, Hayley and the students for their commitment and support.
Year 6 Market Day
Hip hip hooray, today was Market Day! Throughout Term 1, Year 6 students have been studying, across all areas of their curriculum, the topic of ‘Sustainable Business’ and today, they were able to demonstrate their learning in a real-life, tangible way.
We were so proud of the professionalism, creativity, and excitement that they brought to Market Day. The stalls looked like they belonged in a real market with buntings, marquees, banners, and colourful decorations. Students were nervous with excitement as the first group of customers entered the barn area. Big smiles were seen on every face we looked at and it was obvious this event brought joy to our Bellarine campus. Combined with help from the Project Care sausage sizzle, we earned over $4,000 for the Drysdale Foodbank. Thank you to our families for supporting us, it was a massive undertaking which resulted in a fabulous success. A few comments I heard from the year 6 students were, ‘I love seeing all of the happy kids’, ‘I like how everyone is having fun with their friends’, and ‘seeing all the little preps come in and the smiles on their faces made my day’. We are extremely proud of these students, and we believe there are several future business owners in this Year 6 cohort.
Semester 2 Weekly Maths Challenge Number 19
Welcome to the 20th edition, and final one for 2022 of the weekly mathematics conundrums and logical questions. Each week a different maths question is posed to share the fun of mathematical trivia. Share the delight with your family and friends and amaze them with your maths skills!
Did you get last week’s answer? Check out the solution below.
Challenge Number 18 solution A girl meets a lion and unicorn in the forest. The lion lies every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and the other days he speaks the truth. The unicorn lies on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and the other days of the week he speaks the truth. “Yesterday I was lying,” the lion told the girl. “So was I,” said the unicorn. What day is it? ANSWER: Thursday. The only day they both tell the truth is Sunday; but today can’t be Sunday because the lion also tells the truth on Saturday (yesterday). Going day by day, the only day one of them is lying and one of them is telling the truth with those two statements is Thursday. Challenge Number 19 question Here’s a question for the over 18s… There is a barrel with no lid and some wine in it. “This barrel of wine is more than half full,” says the woman. “No, it’s not,” says the man. “It’s less than half full.” Without any measuring implements and without removing any wine from the barrel, how can they easily determine who is correct? Remember no Googling allowed. Answer in the next edition of The Vine.
Year 7/8 Sport Report Term 4
This term, our Year 7/8 sport students displayed their talents and teamwork whilst playing in their GISSA volleyball, cricket and tennis matches against several schools in the Geelong region. Our Bellarine students had a very successful Inter-school competition, with some extremely close results and many victories. Congratulations to all students who participated.
We wish our Year 8 sport students well as they move onto Intermediate Competition next year, with many sporting opportunities to represent the College and compete alongside students from our Highton and Senior Campuses. We look forward to welcoming back and meeting our new Year 7/8 Sport students for 2023. Get ready for an exciting and jammed packed Term 1 of sport!
Grade 5 Solar Boat Tournament
After the student great showing at the interschool competition in Melbourne, the group entered the next design stage of redesigning and refining their designs. They reflected on their designs’ strengths and weakness and altered their boats. They continued to test their modifications and further improve their designs.
“We changed our boat to a slimmer design after we saw other boats at the competition that were very fast. We also added pontoons to balance the boat.”
Hamish Bull and Ben Buscombe
Friday afternoon we had a showdown to find our fastest new designs. 1st Place – James Kelsall ‘Savage Sea Monster’ 2nd Place – Ben Buscombe and Hamish ‘HMS Augustus 1’ 3rd Place – Layla Maddock and Annabelle McAleer ‘Finally Wet’ 4th Place – Owen De’Araugo and Leo Wescott ‘Oceans Apart’ Jorge Veigas, Kate Prtichard and Josh Lees
Year 7 Science – Roaming Reptiles Came to Visit!
Our Year 7 science classes had the thrill of a large range of native Australian reptiles and invertebrate animals visit them this week. Students had completed a biology topic this term, which focused on classification and Australian ecosystems. The air was filled with anticipation as students entered the classroom and over the course of the session were greeted to an array of animals, such as, pythons, lizards, scorpions, crocodile (baby), tarantulas and a giant invertebrate cockroach. A wonderful lesson for our students to appreciate the amazing diversity of animals that we have here in our beautiful country.
Year 5 Concert
It was wonderful to see our community come together to celebrate the great learning of the Year 5s in the Music Program this year. Parents, friends and the Year 4 students joined us for our concert which celebrated our Performer’s Workshop group and our Beginners Concert Band.
The Performer’s Workshop group opened with ‘Oye Como Va’, a classic Latin American piece featuring solos from all of the musicians – it was amazing to witness them improvise and tap into this skill alongside their bandmates. The concert band then performed Jingle Bells, complete with sleigh bells featured in the percussion section to get us in the spirit of Christmas. The two groups then combined to share the two pieces they have collaborated on – ‘Looking forward with hope’ and ‘Sticks and Bones’. The students, staff and families reflected on the great year of learning that has occurred and enjoyed a cup of tea and catch up afterwards, sharing community time together. Our Year 5 Orchestra will also be featured in this year’s Celebration Evening – we look forward to seeing you all there. Please enjoy the attached video, offering you a snapshot of our concert.
Year 7 Food Studies
The year 7 chefs have been honing their culinary skills by experimenting with different flavours and ingredients to put their own twist on a classic fried rice dish. Earlier this term they created their own version of this family favourite, with very pleasing results. To finish off the year, the happy chefs enjoyed being creative with their Christmas biscuit decorations.
Qustodio App and Other Parent Resources
Last week we launched the Qustodio Parent App with our families as part of our Cyber Safe Schools Program, in partnership with Linewize by Family Zone.
We’ve been delighted by the level of engagement and uptake by parents with this tool so far. Qustodio is a tool intended to help parents and guardians be empowered to supervise and engage in positive conversations with their young people around their digital activity.
It has been wonderful to offer this tool, alongside our school’s Online Safety Hub, to parents and our broader community to support our children and teenagers in this space. I encourage parents who have not already done so to activate their account, and to explore the support resources under ‘Child Safety App’ on the Online Safety Hub. It may also be helpful to explore the article ‘Should I be using a parental control?’ which has helpful information and advice about the place and role of a tool like Qustodio in your overall home digital wellbeing strategy. Qustodio Parent Feedback Survey I invite our parents to take just a few moments and share some feedback on Qustodio and getting started with the parent app. Please click the link to access the Parent Feedback Survey Holiday Resources for Parents on our Online Safety Hub As we approach the holiday break and Christmas, there are a range of helpful guides and resources on our Online Safety Hub that parents may find supportive. There are direct links to some key guides below: The hub also has lots of helpful parent guides for specific games, social media platforms and other general technology and cyber safety questions under the ‘Parent Advice’ section.
Picnic at Hanging Rock- 2023 Senior School Production
Preparations are underway for auditions for the 2023 college play Picnic at Hanging Rock. Based on the novel by Joan Lindsay, the play tells the story of a group of schoolgirls in 1900 who go on a picnic to the Hanging Rock, an excursion from which several do not return. This well known and iconic story has had a few stage iterations but is best known for the 1975 movie starring Anne Lambert and featuring many haunting melodies and images.
Students currently in Year 9, 10 and 11 are invited to audition for the play which will be staged from May 11th-13th 2023. Information will be conveyed to Bellarine Campus students next week. Auditions will be held during Transition week. We will be looking for a cast of about 30 students for both female and male roles. The play will be directed by Ms. Kelly Clifford alongside assistant director Ms. Taylah Broad. More information about rehearsals will be conveyed after auditions but at this stage they will be held at senior school on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Several Sunday rehearsals are also scheduled as listed below and students must be available to attend these if cast. Sunday 23rd and 30th April and Sunday 7th May. Any enquiries please contact Ms. Mandy Calderwood at Senior school, Ms. Taylah Broad at Highton Middle school, or Ms. Victoria Kent at Bellarine Campus.

Canteen not Open on Last day of Term
Please note that on the last day of Term 4, Friday December 9, the canteen will not be open.
Thank you to all volunteers for your fantastic help during the course of this term, and throughout 2022.
Recycling Uniform Items
As part of the transition to our new College wardrobe it was important that we consider the environmental impact of clothing items no longer required. Whilst it is still possible for students to wear items from the traditional uniform, when items are no longer able to be worn, they can be recycled.
Any such items can be dropped off and placed in recycling bins at each campus. We are working with our wardrobe manufacturer to ensure that these can be recycled as part of the introduction of our new wardrobe over the next 18 months.
A MYTERN Thought for This Week
Things can get hectic at this time of the year, often throwing a random curve ball, making you skid out of control. At first your reaction will be extreme. That's ok. Once the panic is over, stop and breathe. Regain control. Don't judge it. Give it space to unfold... and then inspire you 👍😊
