Top ATARs for 2023

Congratulations to the Class of 2023!

The College takes immense pride in the efforts of every one of our 168 Year 12 students this year. We celebrate this special cohort and wish them all well as they embark on their post-school journey.

At Christian College, we understand that the broader capacity and capabilities of our young people go way beyond that of a score that has a purpose for a small time in a young person’s life.

That said. It is important to highlight the following excellent results:

  • 30% of our students were in the top 20% of the state
  • 55% of our students were in the top 30% of the state
  • The median ATAR was 73.2
  • The median study score was 30
  • 2 students obtained perfect study scores of 50

Years you attended Christian College?

I attended Christian College from Year 7 to Year 12

Subjects taken at Unit 3/4 level?

In 2023, I studied: General English, General Maths, Maths Methods, Indonesian, and a subject called ‘Extended Investigation’ through Virtual Schools Victoria. Last year, I accelerated in Australian History, also. As you can tell, my subject choices were quite broad, across several study areas (i.e. mathematics, humanities, language, English). For me, it was important to continue to pursue the array of subjects that I do enjoy in school, even if I am unlikely to be continuing in a career path for some of them. When choosing them, these subjects all encapsulated areas that I both had a) had past success in, and b) would provide enough variety in my studies to keep me engaged and mitigate fatigue in going too heavy in one area.

Summing up the Year 12 experience in 2023…

Just a blast – whilst demanding, I thoroughly embraced the opportunity to give Year 12 my best efforts!

Other areas of College life you’ve enjoyed?

I have loved being involved in myriad areas of our school during my time at Christian College – I’ve participated in both the Middle and Senior Strings ensembles (violin), Competed in a multitude of sports at both an intraschool and GISSA level (tennis, football, cross country, etc), and even held leadership positions at Highton Campus. For me, these extra-curricular activities are undoubtedly amongst some of my fondest memories at the College – the sense of camaraderie and community these events construct has fostered friendships and memories I will cherish forever (never forget Kade Leigh’s 40m bomb after the siren to put us in front against Saint Ignatius!)

Plans for 2024?

Next year, I’m hoping to pursue a tertiary education in a combination of Law and another element of the humanities field – potentially International Relations or Politics, Philosophy, and Economics. I’m still unsure what the future beyond tertiary qualification looks like, but I’m confident these degrees would put me in good stead to find employment in an area I love – the dream would be to work in a sporting corporation like the AFL!

Ways in which Christian College has shaped you as a person?

As mentioned, my time undertaking extra-curriculars at Christian College has played a pivotal role in shaping who I am today – all influencing my habits, routines, and passions. The sense of community, too, has cultivated life-long friendships that I am so grateful to have, but has also fostered an extensive webbing of alumni that I am confident I will be able to connect with in years to come and reminisce on our good times together. This sense of camaraderie extends to the teaching staff, also – the continuity I have experienced has taught me how to seek support from others and to embrace those around me, whilst also instilling a desire to reciprocate this. Beyond the academic outcomes, Christian College has cultivated intangibles that have become a part of both my mantra and psyche.

Years you attended Christian College?

I attended Christian College from Prep to Year 12

Subjects taken at Unit 3/4 level?

In Year 12 I have studied English, Math Methods, Psychology, Phys Ed and Japanese.  In Year 11 I accelerated in Health and Human Development.  With my subject choice, it is probably evident that I have an interest in health, with my study of HHD being what prompted my decision to undergo further study in the areas of public health and health promotion.

Summing up the Year 12 experience in 2023…

My 2023 Year 12 experience was an extremely enjoyable one.  The year felt like a celebration of my entire schooling journey alongside some of my greatest friends.

Other areas of College life you’ve enjoyed?

I was involved in the Music Department for a number of years and particularly enjoyed being involved in the Senior Wind Symphony for a few of my Senior School years.

I also had the privilege of being a College Prefect during my final year at CCG.  I am very grateful to have been given the opportunity to serve my community, as well as develop my own teamwork and leadership skills, alongside such a passionate group of my peers.

This year I particularly enjoyed being involved in the College’s first Sport Aerobics team.  I took up a leadership role within this team and through this was able to share my love of aerobics with a few of the new Year 10 students; an opportunity which I found to be very special in my final year at the College.

Plans for 2024?

In 2024 I plan to begin studying a Public Health and Health Promotion degree. I will also be continuing my involvement in Sport Aerobics and hope to qualify for the 2024 World Championships.

Ways in which Christian College has shaped you as a person?

My time at CCG has allowed me to discover what I am passionate about, to find a group of friends that I love, and to develop important skills that will equip me for the years that lie ahead.  I am also immensely grateful for the support my teachers have shown me, particularly in my Senior School years, where I have been both encouraged and supported to be the best version of myself.

Years you attended Christian College?

I attended Christian College from Year 7 to Year 12

Subjects taken at Unit 3/4 level?

My VCE subjects consisted of: English Literature, General Mathematics, Art Making and Exhibiting, Chemistry and Biology. My subject choices, ranging from humanities to sciences reflect my love for creativity and experimentation. While I enjoy the regulated structure of mathematics and science, I also require an outlet for my creativity, as is reflected in my love of literature and arts. I am interested in studies that incorporate both these characteristics.

Summing up the Year 12 experience in 2023…

This year has given me room to grow and develop as a person while still being guided by teachers and classmates, allowing me to take on responsibility with my studies and endeavours while still knowing support is available.

Other areas of College life you’ve enjoyed?

I have enjoyed the sports days and house events as it allowed me and my classmates to develop a better understanding of working together, which enhanced my skills throughout my experiences out of Christian College.

My favourite experience at Christian College was farm in year 9. Fortunately, being at the start of the year, my farm experience wasn’t disrupted by COVID. This experience was where I developed my understanding of communication and teamwork, while also starting to understand the importance of responsibility.

Plans for 2024?

My love of Chemistry and Biology has inspired me to explore a career in science. In 2024, I am hoping to undertake a science degree where I can further develop my understanding and gain an idea on future career pathways.

Ways in which Christian College has shaped you as a person?

Christian College has allowed me to gain an understanding of independence and responsibility while still providing the necessary support from teachers and classmates, which has ultimately taught me crucial life lessons to aid me in years to come. The community of CCG has allowed me to feel comfortable in my development and inspired my aspirations for the future, which I am incredibly fortunate to have experienced in such a supportive environment.

Years you attended Christian College?

I attended Christian College from 3yo Kinder to Year 12.

Subjects taken at Unit 3/4 level?

This year I have studied English Language, Math Methods, Global Politics, Business Management and Economics. Last year I accelerated in Legal Studies. Not only do these subjects reflect what I believe to be my academic strengths, but they all are similar in that they carry very practical applications, they all feel very ‘real-world’ to me. I have found it a lot easier to study subjects such as politics, and economics, where learnings translate into everyday life.

Summing up the Year 12 experience in 2023…

Year 12, whilst a stressful year at times, has been a year where I developed my independence, and learnt the importance of having balance in my life.

Other areas of College life you’ve enjoyed?

I have fond memories of Back Creek Farm, and Year 8 GEOS camp, while I also enjoyed representing the school such as being part of this year’s Senior Boys Soccer team and participating in bands at Middle School.

Plans for 2024?

Next year I see myself attending university. I hope to study commerce, and plan to follow this up studying law. I think my studies will take me to Melbourne, and I would love to travel abroad in the next couple of years.

Ways in which Christian College has shaped you as a person?

Being part of the Christian College community has given me the chance to make connections and relationships with teachers and peers that I will continue to cherish as I leave school. As I have been fortunate enough to be involved in the college for the past fifteen years, I have met so many different people, who have all shaped the person who I am today. Not only has the college provided me with a valuable education, but it has been a foundation in developing me as a person, and my values.

Although largely science-focused subjects can potentially limit an individual, studying these areas has broadened my knowledge and has been well worth it.

Summing up the Year 12 experience in 2023…

It can be hard, stressful and gruelling while also being incredibly rewarding. Just keep pushing through and don’t forget, year 12 is a marathon not a sprint – pace yourself.

Over the last six years, my Christian College experience has allowed me to be positively influenced by a smorgasbord of great teachers and good friends. Top Achievers in VCE VM

Gay Ka Yaw Yaw

Years you attended Christian College?

I attended Christian College from Year 6 to Year 12

Subjects taken at Unit 3/4 level?

I did VCE VM in year 12. Subjects taken were Literacy, Numeracy, Work-Related Studies, and Personal Development. I did Hairdressing as my course. All the subjects I’ve taken have helped me gain many life skills and work skills. My knowledge about the world and working has broadened. During the time at trade school, I have gained more confidence and have become more comfortable in my own skin at work. Doing VCE VM was the perfect option for me since I already knew what I wanted to do and it has given me a head start for my career.

Summing up the Year 12 experience in 2023…

I would say self-discovery because due to doing VCE VM, I had no classes with my friends and was often away from school and because of that, I was able to focus on myself more than I did the past few years and I feel like I’ve found myself.

Other areas of College life you’ve enjoyed?

I don’t really participate in many house activities, but my favourite is definitely House Music. I just love seeing people perform and seeing everyone sing together is just beautiful for me. I also love music and singing but I hate singing in front of a crowd alone so being able to do what I love most with my house group is the best.

Plans for 2024?

In 2024, I will be continuing my Hairdressing apprenticeship until I am a fully qualified hairdresser.

Ways in which Christian College has shaped you as a person?

There were times when life got hard, and my wellbeing wasn’t the best. It would’ve continued going downhill but due to the amazing teachers and other staff, I was able to get through it. The things they have shared with me have had a huge impact. Alex and Helen specifically have helped me a lot throughout my senior schooling. I will forever be thankful for all the conversations I have had with them. Because of the loving and supporting environment at Christian College, I was able to grow as an individual and was able to have a fun teenagerhood with many beautiful memories.
